The Sopranos actor dead: Frank Vincent dead aged 78 following complications from surgery

 

THE Sopranos actor Frank Vincent has passed away at the age of 78.

The actor played mob boss Phil Leotardo on hit show The Sopranos for seven seasons, where his character rose to become the head of the Lupertazzi crime family. 

He also appeared in several Martin Scorsese films such as Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Casino.

According to TMZ, Vincent suffered a heart attack before passing away during open-heart surgery at a hospital in New Jersey.

A statement from Vincent's family announced the sad news, but did not give a reason for his death. 

The star's manager Melissa Prophet said that Vincent "lived life on his terms, creating a dynamic and successful path in every endeavour he chose".

She continued: "His generosity and spirit extended beyond his family and closest friends, as he strived to promote new talent in the performing arts."

He is survived by his widow Katherine, daughters Debra and Maria, son Anthony, as well as two grandchildren and three siblings. 

HBO, the channel which screened The Sopranos, tweeted their sadness about Vincent's death writing: "Our family will never forget the Leotardo legacy. 

"RIP to an HBO legend, Frank Vincent."

Wife of Sopranos star Steve Van Zandt, Maureen Van Zandt also shared a message to share her condolences. 

She wrote: "We lost one of our family today. Frank Vincent. Wonderful actor and lovely man. Rest In Peace, Frankie."
