LIMA, Peru — The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 off Peru’s coast. There have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The USGS says that the temblor struck 26 miles south-southwest of Acari at 4:18 a.m. local time Sunday at a depth of about 7.5 miles. It was initially measured at a magnitude of 7.3.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System briefly warned that waves up to about three feet were possible for the Peruvian coast. Smaller waves up to a foot were forecasted along Chile.
Meteorologists cancelled the warning at around 5:30 a.m.
